SCHUMANN: String Quartets Nos. 1-3
About the Composer:
Robert Shumann (1810-1856) lived an emotionally troubled life, struggling with depression and eventually dying at age 46, two years after a mental breakdown.
About the Music:
Musicologists agree that an emotional and productive high-point of Shumann’s life centered on his marriage to Clara. After their marriage in 1840 he had several productive years, including 1842 during which he wrote these three String Quartets.
I enjoyed all of the music on this disc especially a section of String Quartet No. 1 ”Introduzione: Andante espressivo.” 7m57s to 8m7s reveals one (of many) instances of a theme I enjoy. A variation on this theme closes the piece from 9m8s to 9m32s.
